How to Become a Resident of Canada

What Class Immigrant are you?

Canada accepts three types of immigrants:

  • Economic Immigrants
  • Family Immigrants
  • Refugees
Here is some information on each type to help you determine which class you would fall under.

Economic Immigrant

An Economic Immigrant is a skilled worker or a business class immigrant. If you qualify as an economic immigrant all of your immediate family qualifies as well.

Skilled Worker

To become a skilled worker you must get a score of at least 67/100 on the point system. To get a score of 67 shows the government that you are highly likely/capable of becoming successful as a resident of Canada.

Business Class Immigrant

To qualify as a business class immigrant you need to score only 35 points in the point system. However, this does not make it any easier than qualifying as a skilled worker. You must show the government that you have the motivation and capability to make a significant contribution to Canada's economy and become successful. You can accomplish this by starting your own business, buying a business, or making an investment that proves beneficial to people outside of your family.

Family Immigrant

A family class immigrant is someone who was able to come to Canada, because they had family in the country already. This class of immigrant was created to reunite Canadian residents with family outside of the country. For example, if you are the husband or wife, child, parent, or grandparent of a Canadian resident you qualify to become a family immigrant. Other family members that can possibly qualify as a family Immigrant are brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and grandchildren.

Refugee

Canada is known to be very welcoming and open to refugees. A refugee is someone who migrates to another country out of fear of cruel or inhumane treatment (or death) in his or her own country.

Point System

Unless you are a family class immigrant or a refugee you will have undergo an assessment called the Point System. As you now know from the previous immigrant class descriptions, you need to score at least 35 points to become a business class immigrant and 67 points to become a skilled worker. Here is a chart showing what you need to achieve those scores:
